The Gratitudes

I swim alone. The pool has gotten inky cold. Sunlight no longer dances from surface to the bottom. My hands turn numb. I wrap up in a towel and climb up stairs to a blistering shower. There is the slow dropping of wet clothes the shampooing the warmth coming back and the returning home. Again grateful for this summer evening, his presence in the next room the fan blowing the purple watch the hour the sleep the dreams the three quarter moon and telling myself that we'll take a walk tomorrow.
