I have a smoke on the balcony, hoping to hear a songbird for free. I sit with poor money in my lungs and a cup of coffeed courage to help face the new day. I think of somewhere other than here, somewhere in the distance beyond the cornfields: beyond the cawing of crows hiding from view, provoking with their mocking chorus of wicked laughs. I become the scarecrow stuck in a field being picked at by feasting beaks. I think of Oz...of false Oz's...of wizards and false wizards and then take another sip of artificially sweetened flavor to help quench the thirst. I exhale crow sounds from my lungs...then picture red shoes and whisper her name three times, silently, so that the crows can't hear and be able to follow.

somewhere unknown
