For today, it’s keeping warm. When the sun fails to show those few mid-day hours in December, I wear an extra sweater and drink more hot tea. Warmth: such a modest goal for someone who once had grand plans. Who thought life was one long ascent: bigger, better, smarter, richer, happier. My immediate plan now is to make bread pudding with the heel of an old loaf before it gets too hard or the last of the milk spoils. I’ll bake a Rome Beauty apple at the same time and the scent will be wealth enough for twilight.
