Wheel of Life

It is a hot and humid October afternoon. We are back from a long day of festival shopping. I emerge from the auto with bags, purses and two cranky kids. My sleepy three year old tumbles and bruises his knee. I drop everything and pick him up, rain kisses on his knee and tear-stained cheeks. His doting, elder sister fetches a sippy bottle from my handbag. The watchman of the building comes running and picks up all the baggage. My little one rests his head on my shoulder. I notice our neighbor, a middle-aged gentleman, who is silently watching all this. His younger son, a teenager, was the victim in a fatal car accident just a week ago.
