Palm Trees

My first semester as a college freshman was overwhelming. I hated the mathematics course I was taking and went to talk to the guidance counselor about it. “This is college,” he said, “You don’t have to take classes you don’t like. Focus on what you like that will fit your major. Drop the math class; it’s obvious you won’t need it.” I liked the part about dropping the class; it would make my life much easier. But it didn’t. It took about a year for it to sink in that dropping that one class had made me eligible to be drafted into the army and sent off to war. Finally, I decided that if Uncle Sam was going to be sending me a letter requesting my presence, I’d better get out and see the world, do some traveling and go places I’d never been.
