Umm al-Quwain

It's late at night as we sit on the beach. The laborers from India who work for the resort arrive at the dock in their boat. The moonlight ripples across the water. Voices get louder and louder. My wife and I try to see what they're doing, but they're too far away. We assume they're back from crab fishing, but we're not sure.

from a distant home
come back

We see the man who took us out on a boat ride earlier in the day to sightsee the mangrove islands. On our way back to shore, he told us in minimal English that he was from Kerala and how beautiful it was there. He told us that he was only here for the work and then mentioned something about his wife and baby back home. I couldn't understand exactly what he was trying to say. He looked happy at first, but then he turned his head eastward toward the Arabian Sea and the discussion abruptly stopped. My wife and I left him to his thoughts as we headed back to the pier.
