Phantom Bulb

I can't quite lift my finger. The remote seems far away. My eyes turn only left and right, my chin a mountain somewhere overseas, my elbows anchored on listless sheets, and my knees left long ago for Guatemala.

On Sunday the nurse puts on a football program, to humor someone, not me. I dream I am a handsome patient, articulate and chatty, careless of disease.

The nurse turns out the light when everyone else is gone. I search for photosynthesis, for a healing light that doesn't come.
