The Drawing Lesson

The lesson doesn't quite work—the edge of things, supposedly, but almost immediately I'm pressured into contour and shadow.

When I just want to stay on the edge.

when I want to draw
withered apple blossom
not fresh maple leaves

In a world of other people and what they seem to want—or maybe believe.

I can pretend
to want to sketch this—
surface of the lake

In truth, I don't want to make much of it at all. Want to read my book of detective fiction and drink ordinary coffee with milk and sugar. To not be hip or smart or engaged or helpful. Today.

I don't hear the loons
or write my dreams down
in a bound book.
