Drifting Leaves

Everything is a blur—stop lights, turns, other cars. The walk to the faculty club, the ivy-covered buildings, tree-lined greens, clusters of students—as if walking through a haze. Sitting at dinner with colleagues for the first time since retirement, the oft-repeated conversations—budget problems, lackluster students, research issues, and that inbred conceit of intelligence, the showing off of thoughts about economics, politics and literature—barely audible.
