Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity—in all this vastness—there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
                                                                       —Carl Sagan

At this moment, in some place, something special is happening. A war ends. A disease is cured. The next great novel completed. We hold up the heroes of these events, make them otherworldly in our adoration. But forty years ago we held up the entire planet, a “blue marble” floating in black space. From nothing came something.

I wonder at the night sky, at what emerged that year of my birth. A new perspective? The possibility that from our meager selves the ideal is born?
