If Bruegel Had Lived in Addis

The sidewalks overflow with men hand in foreleg with a goat or sheep. Herds of goats pull every last tuft of grass from the roadside as shepherds guide them down the road to the slaughterhouse. Brahma cows trot along ahead of a boy’s switch or try to hold themselves steady in the back of pickup trucks. Schoolboys play football in the streets and old men shoulder bump, the palm strips wrapped around their heads quivering. The chanting begins a couple hours after sunset, and all around I hear the last bleating and squeals of the neighbors’ goats and sheep. Tonight the hyenas, ignorant of god, will come up from the river valley and feast.
