Midnight

In a beat-up Dodge truck, my husband and I drive the desolate West Texas Highway 285, no cars in front or in back. Not even a light from a ranch house breaks the darkness. When we round a curve, I glimpse the twisted arms of hanging chain chollo caught in the beams of our headlights. We travel on to Fort Stockton where a neon “no vacancy” sign greets us at every lodging except one rundown motel. Inside a swamp cooler dampens the stale sheets, and from the sink comes the steady drip of a leaky faucet.
