Black and White

For her sake I agree to attend the memorial. Bagpipes reverberate upward as the players lead the family processional. A childhood friend recounts tales of youthful escapades and interests. Then come the hopeful hymns.

She survived the affairs, got the divorce. He did her in, kept the inheritance, his pension; bought a homestead and a new life. Mother of his children kept the kids, the mortgage and the repairs. Then I hear the children's eulogies; they fondly recall family vacations, his wood shop, his love of the grandkids. His colorized photo on display like a movie still from the 40s.

She listens in black and white.
