Recovering

intense colour
and perfume fragrant
as the day it was planted
a lavender bush flourishes
by the side of the house

I came to this area by swapping houses from the other end of the country. I knew nothing about the place, but have jumped in its rivers, waded its shores and walked its hills.

light catches
a stunted dandelion . . .
the water ban’s lifted
and bags of feijoas pass
from hand to hand

The room trembles under its cloak of mystery as I lie waiting for sleep to come. It must be late into the afternoon when I start dreaming I’m on some planet where you never do anything, you only have things done to you. And from this world I must escape.
