Mama’s Irises

Where she planted irises, green spears rose from the earth after sleeping all winter, great stalks with buds in their calyx of wisdom unfurling the color of polished tin and burnt sienna. You want to know what beauty is? she asked when I followed her into the garden one day haranguing her for money to buy some makeup. Look at them. They don’t palaver or paste their face. They don’t sass or beg, “pleeease, Mom.” You want beauty, get on your knees and plant irises.
