Aftershock

I heard the teapot rattling this morning, went to the kitchen, your mug the only sign you were there.

My mother tells me tremors are for the weak of heart. Still, my body trembles with the absence of you.

I wander through each room, pull back the layers of our life.

Remember how we promised to clean up this mess? How you said these piles would do us in?

Were the picture frames always so crooked? Did your mug have that chip before today?
