A Lingering Memory

Budapest has the second largest synagogue in the world, now mostly a tourist stop and museum. To the East just across the border is Oradea, Romania with three synagogues no longer used, the Jewish community long gone. The smallest one was hardest to find. Each person asked said it was by a grocery store. Its Star of David window grill tilted to one side. A church had been erected adjacent to its back corner. The local university parking lot was behind it. The grocery store was a gypsy fruit and vegetable stand pushed into the synagogue's surrounding fence. The gloriously colored produce was stored inside the building.
