At thirteen I started listening to the radio at night. I always tuned to Radio Luxembourg. Free from British broadcasting restrictions, it was the best station for pop. On medium wave, at night, reception was not good. Distortion waxed and waned, hiss and crackle accompanied the music.
In spite of this, in the dark, the songs became more intense. I learned the lyrics. I strummed an imaginary guitar. I found my thoughts straying into new territories.
