13 degrees

I enter the coffee shop before sunrise, drawn in by the blinking neon cup on the window. I cross the glass boundary from winter to warmth and walk across the bright space to the counter. Snowflakes disappear on my dark wool coat.

"Good morning," he says, from this warmer world, "what can I get you?"

"A small coffee please, to go."

"Room for cream?"

Clouds and the day
drift away formless
an open door

I head out into the snow, the perfect, still dreaming about that room for cream.
