Packing Nietzsche

The box must have weighed forty-five pounds as we lurched down the aisle of the 747. It was triple thick cardboard sealed with fiberglass tape. A couple of years ago our son’s baby clothes padded antique china: the slow leak of items from storage in a guest room closet of my childhood home. This year it was books and the musty smell of knowledge. We deliberated what subject we would include. Would this be the year of trafficking Hesse or Heidegger? Our Merton all fit in the blue vinyl carryon. Some books were so good that we had already purchased and read their replacement. Our fortune now was having two copies of the same book. The box with the crossed-out biohazard symbol didn’t raise concern back then as we struggled to place it in the overhead bin.
