Val-da-ree Val-da-rah

It is pouring rain and the trail has become a stream. My step-son’s long legs have taken him far ahead of everyone. A bum knee has kept my step-daughter lagging behind. Her father hikes with her. Suddenly, my foot slips and I am flat on my back, 35-lbs. of backpack beneath me. Like an overturned turtle I flail about, finally flipping to my belly. I crawl to a large rock, pull myself upright, sit, and tell myself this will make for a funny story . . . someday.
