The old sailor has cut his mother’s bike in half. (He has lost two women in his life: his mother and his wife). Now he’s trying to make one men’s bike out of two ladies’ bikes. The two pieces don’t fit properly. Two metal tubes have to bridge the gap in the frame. He welds them together. What becomes fluid in a blue heat, glows orange for a moment and solidifies into hard metal.

With his face hidden behind the welding shield he watches the process. The pain in his lower back is nagging

autumn rain—
her pannier bags carry
his groceries
