Peace Now . . . and Then

Mitsa Suzuki was wife and partner of Shunryu Suzuki, founder of the San Francisco and Tassajara Zen Centers. Her first husband, Masaharu Matsuno, was a Japanese pilot in the war against China. One of his jobs was to choose targets for bombing raids—she wrote to him, "Remember that those people in China also have wives and children. Please target rice fields instead of cities and towns. Drop bombs to surprise the snails in the rice fields." Two weeks after she sent Masahuru a photograph of their new-born daughter, she was a widow.
