Song for Jessica

Before we met I had listened to her CDs for years. She had been with me on rainy days in the nation's capitol, along the Pacific Ocean with waters shifting moodily in the sun, in the kitchen while I crushed pan-roasted herbs with mortar and pestle. Jazz flowed from her as she framed each chord or touched a single key. Her interpretations of Mingus, Monk, Miles, Ellington, and others opened a mine of meaning. The night we finally met, the moon swelled full and gold. She sat at the piano in the small New Mexico club, pensive and introspective, playing her inimitable jazz.
