After A Doll's House

She closed the paperback and, placing it on the nightstand, pondered the fate of Ibsen's Laura who, as punishment for the secret loan, found herself divorced, then committed, by her husband, to an asylum far from home. How Laura's sufferings resembled her own! The playwright's door offered Laura little consolation and later she would learn to resent the reference.

while he sleeps
she's half dressed
in the bathroom
soaping and rinsing
her private parts

Valium
in the coming twilight—
the hermit thrush
hidden in the thicket
harmonizes with itself

under a blood moon
sheets and towels, pinned—
the cornered doe
runs through a corridor
of parallel lines
