Coarse Thread

There, at the fishmonger’s, you are left in the cold, waiting before the frosty aura of that glass-encased selection, waiting while the white-aproned proprietor with thin moustache, who once alluded to his many amours in Lisbon, bickers in Portuguese with his dark and diminutive better-half, waiting while the good woman wraps today’s fresh catch in butcher paper, tying it off with coarse thread.

for the wounded voice
of the old world, no
translation’s needed—
a rainbow’s perfect pout
on a twinkling bed of ice

Their duet—now bitter, now sweet—does not flag as you trip, upon exit, the little bell above the door.
