Last Days

in dusty corners
of her room . . .
eyesight failing, deaf
to highway traffic roar

It's still raw, the days with Mum before she moves into Care. I feel very much the child as we go through her belongings and decide what to keep, what to pass on to others. Her bent fingers caress every item before it is packed.

rose glass jug
behind leadlight doors
catches the sun
for a moment
her tired face brightens

royal albert tea set
an anniversary gift
from dad
60 years together
so few treasures

camphorwood chest
with dragon carved motif
from my brother's
navy days
fills her tiny lounge

patchwork cushions
on every lounge chair
the sofa too
hand knitted angora rug
beside her recliner

wooden framed
family photos line
mum's shelves
in front of favourite books
classic and modern novels
