You Go First

Grandpa’s cellar. Musty and dank. Lou-Lou and I don’t like it. The lingering musk in the wine press. Scant light from two small windows splotched with mud. Dark corners where anything could hide. Spiders, mice, dead or alive. Grandma’s jarred fruits and vegetables on warped shelves draped in snarling webs. The coal-burning furnace throwing off heat and smells.
