Four Deaths in Two Hours

A taxi driver pumping fuel in his cab. The landscaper mowing grass at a car dealership. A young mother vacuuming her car at a gas station. The housekeeper sitting on a bench at the bus stop, reading her book.

For three weeks, we lived in a panic. Commuters crouched between their cars and the gas pumps as they filled their tanks. Schools cancelled outdoor activities, a few closed completely.

For three weeks, we looked carefully around us as we walked. White vans and box trucks were eyed suspiciously. Two undocumented immigrants in a white van were arrested, cleared of involvement, then deported.
