In Primeval Forests Deities Grew . . .

Dravidian jungle nomads chanted praise to lords of thunder and rain. Gonds gifted deities with worshipful acts. Guardian clans sacrificed sheep, goats. Iron spear points and yak tail fly-whisks punctuated Hindu temple worship. Ifugao gods filled five regions of universe; when threatened with cholera or smallpox, devotees bowed to the sky.
