Boogie Oogie Oogie

……… red green and blue spotlights flicker through the smoky darkness and spatter across the polished wooden floor and the eager faces of young dancers―their innocent cheeks and backlit halos of hair―grooving to the music, each performing their own Saturday Night moves, yet keeping immaculate time―synchronised―responding to every pop and bounce―working out―songs of hope and love and tragedy expressed through bounding basslines and thrilling strings―snazzy guitar lines―that two-four beat―that hard dangerous groove―and Joni is the star, a swirl of flouncy hair and hemline, all knees and elbows, hips and ankles―a butterfly with wings of gingham―nailing the backbeat with each stomp of her stilettos, dancing in her own special space―surrounded by guys in flares and pastel shirts clapping her on―Joni digs the attention, smiling and concentrating, reaching for the ceiling―dancing with each partner in turn―she gets tossed along the line like a hot potato, spinning from one embrace to the next―from one man to the next―Greg, Chad, Todd and Tony―they love her and she loves them, in her own ways―through their fresh-faced expressions we can see the future—three will use her, one will abuse her―two will betray her, one will break her heart………

spinning around
