Front Row

She’s hesitant as she stops me, looking desperate and shy at the same time. She unravels her story one disaster at a time. A job interview postponed, a car on fire, a scoundrel mechanic, her money gone, her dog locked in her mobile home in another city. A twenty will buy her bus fare home. Half of my brain yells scam, the other half is drowning in a sea of compassion. It takes over half an hour to hear the whole story and have every solution other than “bus fare home” shot down. The encore: tears in her eyes and a hug before the exit.

Later I learn that a friend of mine attended the same show. I don’t feel “taken.” I prefer to tell myself that a private performance like that was worth the price.
