Bay of Islands

In the clear light of summer by way of a steep footpath from the beach we walk towards the Mission House where the Treaty was signed. We come up the hill to the house, look out to sea where a party of tourists from a cruise ship in the bay is taking photographs. Each person wears a coloured sticker. When their guide calls out the colour of the sticker, they follow her sombrely. This hallowed place becomes a loud hubbub for those who know nothing about its history. Here, on the lawn, is the flag post which was cut down three times by the Māori warrior Hone Heke. The tumult of the holiday crowd moves off towards the cafeteria. Perhaps they ponder the history of the man who is now dust and who changed the lives of many of his people.
