On a misty, cloudy day in May, we drive up to the three observation sites that overlook the surrounding islands of Jamami-jima in Okinawa. Isamu Noguchi thought Ryoanji rock garden in Kyoto was the most inspiring Zen garden he had ever seen. Had he been to Okinawa and seen the naturally created rock garden at sea? No need to sweep the sand here; the vast sea looks glassy yet alive in shimmery ripples. The boundaries between sky and sea are blurred: rocks are rising out of the water, and the sky is descending with clouds wrapping and hugging the tops of the rock-mountains.
