The Insomniac

For the past two decades, I've lived overseas, so my annual visits back home are rather joyous occasions. Our family reunions are opportunities to go down memory lane with a bit of banter thrown in for good measure.

After a most satisfying feast, Dad gets the ball rolling when he informs everyone that I was a pain in the neck as a baby. Not to be outdone, Mom jumps in to contribute to the story. She rattles on about their futile attempts to get me to sleep at night, adds that I kept them just as busy in the daytime refusing to nap, and warns me to be on my best behavior tonight. My young niece and nephews crack up at the thought of me as a problem child.

I play my part by feigning dismay at being metaphorically thrown under the bus and protest that sleep still eludes me, which I’m quick to point out is all Grandpa’s fault as he snores loud enough to rattle the windows. More laughter ensues although I’m serious this time.
