Vision Quest

Sitting in the deep cold of the cave beyond the reach of day or night, the only sound is the beating of her heart, resonant and powerful. Presently, she senses her russet hide, the powerful muscles of her shoulders and neck, and the long curving horns of her bison-spirit. Days of hunger and fervor follow. Using the shape of the cave wall, she blows ochre and soot black to form the charging bull. Her final sign, the soot halo of her shaman hand on the wall.

I get ahead of him. I’m excited to see the bas-relief cave paintings. Years of art history and books about life in Ice Age Europe swirl together. I stand transfixed within the three-dimensional, plastic cave walls. Presently, I wonder what my grandson thinks of the exhibit. He’s fallen well behind me, and faintly I hear a museum guard warning someone, “Don’t touch the exhibit.”
