Cat's Cradle

I wander into the living room in the hush of early morning, inhaling steam from a just-poured cup of coffee. On the big table, Curious George, Treasure Island, assorted Lego pieces, and a half-finished dinosaur puzzle lie in a jumble.

My boys, eight and six, know better than to leave such a mess. I grab an empty laundry basket from behind the couch and dump everything into it. It's only then I notice the cat lying under the window in a pool of yarn, washing an ear and purring loudly.
