A Poet's Mark

Poems painted on cave walls, the sides of mountains, and rocks endure.

a fallen quill
from a wayward goose
its hollow point
dipped in a poet's blood
to scratch out the truth

But what of words typed from a keyboard onto a hard drive that only long-forgotten computer programs can read?

ones and zeroes—
from the day of our birth
to our final gasp
in the end we know
that is all we ever were

Our poems of unrequited love, running brooks, and cherry blossoms will be lost to the junk heap of technology, as we are lost to the monsoons of time.

words of the soul
etched in flint and bone
trod upon
by men with guns and swords
whose tears will never fall
