Trick or Treat

"Hi Dad. It's me, Lucy," I chuckle, recalling his Peanuts-flavored nickname for me. I chatter about this and that, popping candy corn into my mouth between sentences. The autumn bouquet I’ve brought for him is neatly arranged in a vase.

The leaden sky turns to black. It's getting late. As I stand to go, an orange diaphanous sphere with yellow-white triangle eyes hovers over his grave, then dissipates into undulating smoke.

some see
rainbows or pennies
as signs
who is to say
the Great Pumpkin isn't real?
