On the Shelf

My comic books remain lined up in order of release. On the first volume, the dust of three decades is unmoved by cloth, draught, or hand, Tintin's quiff yellow and faded. A water stain blurs Inca mummies, the only intrigue on a bland cover.

Snowy, in a space suit, looking over the Hipparchus Crater, cuts a forlorn figure these days, with a rip slicing him in two. Despite the dog-eared pages, where sleep gained ascendancy, I can't bring myself to throw these stories away. Besides, I'm in no rush to clear out the back room.

Author's Note: Prisoners of the Sun and Explorers on the Moon are two illustrated adventure stories by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. Tintin and Snowy are characters in his stories.
