A Wish to Thrive

On an island two wingspans long, a pair of swans with a meagre nest. With one clutch of eggs already discarded, the female is now sitting tight. Fearing water levels may rise again, a few of us watch from the bridge. Storms forecast. After thunder lightning torrential rain, the view from the bridge brings relief. The cob continues to build up the nest around his mate with pecked-off twigs and grasses. The pen, with her neck looped over her back, does not stir. Dream on, I whisper. Dream on.

a flurry of feathers
drift with the flow
