Dawn Wake-Up

A rough, metallic ratcheting sound from the cellar, the fireplace, the attic, the heater vents. All those places, yet none of them. Short, repeated bursts beginning in the summer dawn and continuing at irregular intervals for four or five hours. Finally, after a few days, we think to look outside. On the chimney's metal liner a yellow-shafted flicker.

Binoculars bring him close. A colorful bird with a red band across the nape of his neck, golden feathers on his breast flecked with black. Head held high, he sings out.

We turn on the furnace briefly, a quick shot of hot air up the chimney.
