Fitting In

The sun is out after five days of rain. Everyone in the room bears a lighter demeanour than the previous week: The middle-aged tech geek, a homemaker who seeks to get a few hours away, another who drives two hours to this class, and two eager beavers who love anime more than themselves. And then there is me—their sensei. I have learned that “sensei” is an honorific form of address. It refers to someone who has mastered an art form and could also just mean “a person born before.” How do I fit into this suffix? I settle for the last option: I was born before most of the people in this room, and had started walking on this path before them.
