Shades of Earth

Along the path, dainty cream caps sway on thin stems. Red speckled mushrooms reach up from the ground at my feet. On the old apple tree, ripples of lichen curl atop gnarled bark. Under the dirt, rhizomes multiply, break new ground. And beneath my own not so placid surface, worries about aged family and the rumble of politics swell into tremors of anxiety. Yet there’s nothing to be done. Except wander into the forest, pick the fanciful fungi, throw them into a steaming pot, along with sadness and fear, dyeing them in intricate shades of wildness, pumping their gills for breath.
