High Summer

On a dirt-packed trail, the tiny coastal town recedes. Italian hillsides, alive with grapevines and untended foliage. High stone walls surround the secluded path. Around each corner, glorious silence. An hour passes, then two, before anyone appears. A young man who nods but does not stop. After walking on, the sound of footsteps pounding behind me. Turning, I see him, a blur of motion, this same now not-so-friendly-looking stranger. Passing me at a gallop, he leans in, grabs at me and pinches hard with his strong fingers. As he runs off, a cloud of fine dust settles on my sunburned skin.
