The Silk Road

My first night in Tokyo—a new and exciting world of live eels in metal washtubs, glittering city lights, and legions of people murmurating like starlings. Huge electric billboards attached to office buildings on every corner, advertisements for Subaru, Suntory, Seiko, Coca Cola. Young girls with too much lipstick, mini-skirts, and long black hair giggle over something. Someone shouts in Japanese over a loudspeaker. No one pays attention. A fast-talking young man hustles me into a Pachinko parlor and promises to show me around. I’ll be right back, he says. I wait for a long time, but he never returns. I watch the silver balls. Clink, clink, clink.
