I saw them walking together regularly. A tall, slightly hunched man, always wearing his Alabama ball cap and a rumpled jacket. His tiny wife, with perfect stature and a neatly coiffed gray bob, walking tightly by his left side, her hand in his. In his right hand he held two leashes, attached to matching Shih Tzus that scampered ahead of them.

About a month ago, I saw him walking the two dogs alone, his left hand shoved deep into his jacket pocket.

Note: Gajumaru is known as the tree that “walks.” This comes from the fact that the aerial root grows into a trunk and gradually moves itself from its original position over a long period of time.
