My Great-Grandmother Tells Her Side

It’s supposed to be a secret—I am half-Cherokee. Maybe that’s why my husband, Robert, and I scream at each other. This house, this furniture should belong to me. Like most Englishmen, Robert feels he owns everything. That’s not the Cherokee Way.

He visits a blonde, blued-eyed woman on the Brazos. I don’t care. She can have him. The next time he leaves, I’m taking our son to Mother’s house in East Texas. She will take us in. If I stay, my spirit will become brittle like saltgrass on this coastal plain.
