Early November

I do not yet know that it will take her two more months.
Yesterday she asked if I had “any of those pills so I
can die now.” I am hiding out with her in a trench
of love, sifting through words as if they could
fill in the loss, even before it comes. Her bird
feeder is empty. The sunflowers mock us
with their brilliance. The gourd, with its
lumps and warts, keeps us company.
And Mozart offers his relentless
cheer not knowing that
he will be buried in
a pauper’s grave.
