The Rest Is Unseen

I read a poem in a book by a friend I’ve never met. The verse was found painted on a bridge I’ve seen but never crossed. The lines are attributed to a man I’ve known, whom some call God, others a prophet. He is for me a sage when he teaches, “The world endures but an hour.” Yet we cling to what we see. Still we hope for eternity.

Note: The title is the final line from a teaching inscribed upon the Buland Darwaza, or Gate of Victory, constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar at Fatehpur Sikri. The verse begins, “Jesus, Son of Mary, on whom be peace, said, 'The world is a bridge, pass over it, but build no houses upon it.'”
